The Red River Gorge Geological Area is home to the first "Via Ferrata" in the United States.  A Via Ferrata is a European Cabled Climbing System with hand and foot rungs.  The climber is attached via two safety cables and is able to "free" climb on the hand and foot rungs nearly 80 foot in height.  This experience gives the beginning climber the feeling of free climbing without the risk.
